Guidelines for Contributors

- Umwelt und Gesundheit Online (Environment and Health Online) is an electronic publication of the Gesellschaft für Umwelt, Gesundheit und Kommunication e.V. (Society for Environment, Health and Communication) headquartered in Cologne, Germany (http://www.gugk.de/). The Society for Environment, Health and Communication is a non-profit organization that assumes financial responsibility for review, editing, and posting of electronic contributions to Umwelt und Gesundheit Online. Editorial oversight for Umwelt und Gesundheit Online is provided by charter members of the International Consortium for Interdisciplinary Education about Health and the Environment (founded December 15, 2007). Klaus Klein, Dr.rer.nat (University of Cologne, Germany) and Robert J. McDermott, PhD (University of South Florida, Tampa FL, USA) serve as coeditors.

- The primary purpose of Umwelt und Gesundheit Online is to offer an electronic online journal of practice and scholarship of interest and relevance to the interdisciplinary practitioner and academic communities concerned with health and the environment. Because Umwelt und Gesundheit Online is presented as an electronic medium, communication can be rapid and immediate upon completion of editorial and refereed approval. Umwelt und Gesundheit Online is designed to be an effective educational and dissemination tool for practitioners, scholars, and students of health and the environment. Articles are solicited from individuals representing any discipline or field of interest that supports preservation of the environment and promotes understanding of the impact of the environment on health and human well-being.

- Umwelt and Gesundheit Online publishes articles by academicians, practitioners, and students, and solicits reviews of important media and educational materials from recognized experts. Umwelt und Gesundheit Online attempts to promote linkages between the academic and the practice communities and across disciplines with relevance to the environment and to public health. Articles undergo a rigorous editorial process designed to sharpen and strengthen substance and tone. Contributors should use the bibliographic reference style of the publication manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 5th edition, published in 2001, for guidance. However, editorial assistance is available from editorial staff affiliated with Umwelt und Gesundheit Online so authors need not be obsessed with meeting every detail of style. Tables, figures, charts, diagrams, schematic representations and photographs can be presented in a style initiated by the author, but may be altered by editors prior to publication to fit the style of the Umwelt und Gesundheit Online.

- Umwelt und Gesundheit Online is particularly interested in publishing work that improves translation of research-to-practice. Most contributions should take the form of State-of-the-Art Review Articles, Practice Notes, Case Studies, Legislative Analyses, Interviews, and Research Studies. Guest editorials will be invited. Whereas manuscripts about any issue related to the environment will be considered for publication by Umwelt und Gesundheit Online, papers of special interest include ones concerning air and air quality, biology and biological systems, built environment, climate change, economics, education, engineering, environmental health, environmental sciences, epidemiology, forestry, geography, geology, health and health policy, international treaties, lakes, law, measurement and methods, noise, oceanic issues, politics, psychological determinants of environmental friendly behaviors, recycling, regulations, rivers and streams, social injustice, social policy, teacher education and professional preparation, toxicology, water and water quality, wildlife, and numerous other possibilities. Manuscripts representing Original Research will be considered for publication providing there is an obvious link from the research conclusions to their practice implications. Other types of contributions are welcomed providing they, too, are relevant to the environment or to the translation of research to public health practice. Inclusion of vehicles such as video-streaming and other media that take advantage of the electronic format is encouraged.
